He was installed as the head of the Inchegiri doctrine after his guru's passing. In two and a half years of association, Maruti realized his true self and awoke to the cause, renaming himself Nisargadatta. Born into a poor Hindu family as Maruti Shivrampant Kambli, he was inducted into the Inchegiri branch of the Navnath Sampradaya by his guru Siddharameshwar Maharaj.
